Snowpack in the Gunnison Basin, CO is currently 52,350% above average, a stat that sounds ridiculous, but is in fact accurate. The state of Colorado as a whole is currently sat at 761% above normal.
However accurate that figure might be, it’s not as huge as it sounds. There is currently less than 9″ of snow in the Gunnison Basin, but compared to the median amount for this time of year (going back 30-years), pretty much zero is what gives us such an impressive number.
Becky Bolinger at the Colorado Climate Center explained it in a Tweet last week:
“Here’s a helpful way to look at CO’s current snowpack situation: 1. Currently 761% of ave. 2. More importantly, peak snowpack was 133% of ave. 3. Peak occurred around the time it normally does. 4. We should be about 6% left of peak now, but we’re still at 43% left.”
Lies, damned lies, and statistics.
